Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail (GRHCRT) Management Plan: Update

September 12, 2011

In another major milestone for the Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail (GRHCRT), the Management Plan was approved by the GRHCRT Committee on Thursday 8th September for submission to the Mitchell, Murrindindi and Mansfield Shire Councils for their formal acceptance at their September Council meetings. Approval by the GRHCRT Committee followed an extensive public consultation phase, with public meetings at:

  • Yea
  • Alexandra
  • Seymour and
  • Mansfield

Public interest in the management plan has been positive, with a total of over 60 people attending these public meetings.

Construction of the Rail Trail between Tallarook, Yea, Alexandra and Mansfield is on track for completion by December 2011. The Rail Trail passes through many communities on its 134km length.

The Management Plan for the Rail Trail was developed in co-operation with the Mitchell, Murrindindi and Mansfield Shire Councils, government agencies, emergency services, indigenous community and community interest groups.  The Plan provides guidelines for the management of the Rail Trail to help facilitate a safe and enjoyable user experience as well as the protection and enhancement of environmental assets and ensure consistent management of the trail through the three municipalities.

The Rail Trail is an exciting new asset for the economy, communities and environment of the three Shires.  The Management Plan enables the Trail to be managed and marketed in a consistent way along its full length.
