Getting around town

The Mansfield Shire Council encourages our community to consider environmentally friendly transport options in their daily commute and long distance travel to assist in lowering the use of non-renewable resources, lower pollution and improve public health.

Creating a society where car travel is the 'option of last resort' rather than the default travel option will allow us to redirect money and space we currently allocate to cars to create a healthier world for our people. By making the shift to sustainable travel we will achieve many benefits for the environment, economically and in bettering community health.

As we emerge from COVID-19 restrictions, more people than ever are asking for safe places to walk and ride. Council is committed to increasing sustainable transport throughout the Shire for walking and cycling.

On your bike

According to research from Sydney University, commuting cyclists are twice as happy as people who drive, walk or use public transport to get to work.

Take-in Mansfield’s natural environment by utilising the Great Victorian Rail Trail or see here to find out what other bike trails and cycling tracks our region has to offer. Mansfield Shire strongly advocates for more resources to be devoted to the implementation of linking bike paths throughout the district.

Bike Ed is a program run by VicRoads aimed to help primary school students (aged 9 to 13 years old) to develop the skills they need to ride safely and independently on paths and roads.

The Bicycle Network has extensive information and events and actively promotes families riding to school. Check out their website or contact your school for more information.

Walk

Council is continually developing our pedestrian network, which entails upgrading and linking our walking infrastructure.

Walk to School is a Victorian Health initiative that promotes an active way to get to school. Look at their  or ask your school for more details. https://www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au/

Extensive pathways are currently being linked throughout the community in order for council to encourage walking as a greater option than taking your car.

Walk Safely to School Day is another initiative that Council encourages parent and schools to partake in. For more information, please visit the Walk Safely to School Day website.

Catch the bus

For long distance travel Mansfield’s V/line service to Melbourne connects with the train line in Lilydale and Melbourne. For updated times and travel information, visit Public Transport Victoria.

Mansfield has an excellent bus service throughout the district for school drop-off and pick-up.The Shire encourages the use of these services to limit car usage throughout the district. Ask your school about the bus service running from your home.

Mt Buller’s bus service to Mt Buller is an excellent option to save on single car travel. Contact the Mansfield – Mt Buller Bus lines on 03 5775 2606 for bus travel times and stop locations.

Travel locally

Choosing to holiday in our beautiful local communities is as equally environmentally friendly as it is economically friendly. Whether via bike, foot, car or bus travel (get creative), our local destinations have much to offer for a relaxing get away.

Electric vehicles

Council is a proud participant in the state-wide ‘Charging the Regions’ project. Charging the Regions is aimed at helping local governments across Victoria to understand their role in providing or facilitating public electric vehicle charging infrastructure. For more information, click here.

As communities worldwide are making the move towards electric as a permanent mode of travel, we look forward to supporting our towns in implementing more electric vehicle charging stations.
