The speed on 5 local roads will be reduced in coming weeks in response to community feedback.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said Council worked with the Department of Transport to ensure safe roads for the community.

“As our population grows, the volume of traffic on the road increases. This isn’t just cars, it’s also pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders,” said Cr Tehan.

“We have a vast network of roads to maintain and regularly consider how road movements change as our community changes.

“Safety is our primary concern when considering speed limits. We consider how traffic needs to move through the area to support our community and our economy.”

To permanently change speed limits on roads, even on Council roads, the process includes Council working with the Department of Transport through an application process. The following roads have now been approved for speed reductions:

  • Maintongoon Road, Bonnie Doon - Speed reduction from 80km/h to 60km/h from Maroondah Highway intersection to the existing 60km/h zone
  • Barnetts Road, Howqua Inlet - Speed reduction from 100km/h to 50km/h on the entire length of the road from the Mansfield-Woods Point Road intersection
  • Crosbys Lane, Mansfield - Speed reduction from 80km/h to 50km/h from Mt Buller Road to Ogilvies Road
  • Old Tolmie Road, Tolmie - Speed reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h from Mansfield-Whitfield Road intersection to the Broken River.
  • Withers Lane, Mansfield - Speed reduction from 80km/h to 50 km/h from Maroondah Highway to Dead Horse Lane. (Dead Horse Lane will remain 60km/h).

These speed reductions have been made in accordance with the Department of Transport Speed Zoning Guidelines. Implementation of these speed reductions and signage updates will occur over the coming weeks.
