Calling an End to Gender Based Violence
Published on 26 November 2021
“Respect Women - Call it Out” is the focus of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2022 campaign. This positive message aims to support communities to engage in conversations about ‘respect’ – what respect means to us, what respect looks like and how to put respect into practice, especially in the context of gender equality.
Mansfield Shire Council is participating in this international recognised campaign, raising awareness about eliminating family violence.
The annual campaign is bookended by two significant days, 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and finishes on 10 December (World Human Rights Day), highlighting the link between violence against women with human rights issues.
Mayor Cr James Tehan said the campaign encourages bystanders to ‘call it out’.
“The campaign is designed to promote others to respond to incidents of violence, sexism, harassment, or discrimination and aligns with Council’s focus on a healthy, safe, inclusive and resilient community,” he said.
“We continue to experience incidents of family violence in our community. The campaign provides an opportunity for us to make it clear that violence in any form is not tolerated or accepted in our community.”
“It’s clear that we need to talk about respect for women, respect for one another and how respect sits at the core of all safe and healthy relationships.”
“If you see disrespectful behaviours, call them out. By doing so, we stand together to create a community where everyone feels safe, equal and supported.”
