Council Awards Recycling and Waste Contracts
Published on 23 March 2023
Mansfield Shire Council has approved the award of several contracts to Cleanaway as the primary provider of recycling and waste services for the Mansfield Shire starting from July 2024.
The contracts include collection of household recycling and waste from kerbside bins, emptying of public bins and sorting of recycling. From July 2024, green waste bins will also be introduced in the urban areas of Mansfield Shire.
Council will consult with the community and work with Cleanaway to define and confirm the urban areas where households will receive the new green waste collection service. A green waste processing contract was also endorsed and awarded to BioMix, located near Shepparton.
Mayor Cr James Tehan said the collaborative procurement process with 11 other councils and Alpine Resorts has ensured that Mansfield Shire ratepayers get the best possible value for their recycling and waste charges.
“Over the past 12 months Council has conducted a very thorough community engagement on the types and frequencies of recycling and waste services wanted by the community,” he said.
“During community engagement Council heard from over 2000 people who either attended a workshop, completed a survey, or visited Engage Mansfield.”
One of the most contentious questions was whether community members wanted their red general waste bin to be emptied weekly or fortnightly. Over 300 community members voted, with a nearly four-to-one result in favour of keeping the red bin emptied weekly.
“Council has listened carefully to the community, and the weekly red bin and fortnightly yellow bin collection frequency will remain unchanged, and we look forward to seeing a green waste bin introduced in the urban areas after July next year,” added Cr Tehan.
“We are happy with the tender outcomes and I would like to personally thank all those who provided feedback about their recycling and waste services.”
Cleanaway’s contract also includes the collection of bulk skips from the Mansfield Resource Recovery Centre and the Woods Point transfer station, and the transport of recycling for sorting and waste for disposal.
