Council Joins Battery Initiative to Boost Community Resilience
Published on 19 January 2024
Council is pleased to announce its partnership in the 'Regional Greenhouse Alliance Neighbourhood Battery Investigation Project,' an important initiative aimed at developing investment-ready business cases for community batteries.
This project will focus on the Bonnie Doon Community Centre and Mansfield Community Centre, both designated relief centres during emergencies. Funding has been secured through the Victorian Government's Neighbourhood Battery Initiative.
Aligning with Council's Environment Strategy, the project will also involve the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance, and Gippsland Alliance for Climate Action.
The comprehensive business cases will be developed in partnership with Indigo Power, addressing key aspects such as budget, funding sources, and timelines. Alongside the environmental benefits, the project will also provide essential infrastructure for emergency relief centres, enhancing community resilience.
Mayor Cr Steve Rabie expressed his enthusiasm for the program.
“This project, funded by the State Government, aligns with Council’s dedication to the environment and community wellbeing, as such we are positioning Bonnie Doon and Mansfield Community Centre’s as models for sustainable and resilient communities."
The project complements Council’s continual work in environmental and sustainability projects, including weed spraying works, tracking corporate emissions data, and active collaboration on projects with GBCMA and DEECA.
"Council’s involvement in the Neighbourhood Battery Initiative project shows that we are not just addressing immediate needs, but are laying the foundation for a sustainable and robust future,” added Cr Rabie.
