Council continues big investment in road renewal

Another big year of road renewal works has wrapped up, keeping up the momentum from Council’s significant investment last year.
Every year, roads across the Shire are selected for resealing or resheeting. At the end of winter Council crews and contractors begin the months-long job of working progressively through them all.
Council has now finished renewing 38.9km of roads in 2024, including 8km of resealing and 30.9km of resheeting.
Resealing works involve profiling the road surface and stabilising soft spots, then finally applying a new spray seal over the existing road surface.
Resheeting involves adding a new 100mm layer of crushed rock, then compacting and shaping the new surface. Roadside drainage is also cleared and maintained on each section of road being resheeted. This year approximately 14,610 tonnes of crushed rock was added in resheeting across the Shire.
High Street has also received significant asphalting works on its road shoulders and streetside parking spaces. Those sections are maintained by Council, whereas the traffic lanes are maintained by the Department of Transport and Planning.
Asphalting provides a higher quality and more durable surface than the spray-seal method used on most of the Shire’s sealed roads. Asphalting is more expensive but has a longer life and holds up better to the slow moving and heavy traffic common in High Street.
Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said road renewals and upgrades are a high priority for Council.
“We know that roads are one of the most important issues for our community,” he said.
“The results of the most recent community satisfaction survey clearly show that our community wants us to do better on our Shire’s roads.
“That’s why we’re continuing to make big investments in upgrading and renewing our road network – to make sure we get on top of our Shire’s road condition and stay on top.
“To get the best bang for our buck, we’re now doing a lot of the work in-house with our Field Services team,” Cr Rabie said.
