Council to Construct Malcolm Street Footpath
Published on 08 April 2022
After years of lobbying, Mansfield Shire Council has successfully obtained grant funding for a footpath on Malcolm Street. The path will run on the south side of Malcolm Street, across from the golf course, between Apollo Street and Kidston Parade.
Mayor Cr James Tehan said Council had lobbied for funding for the project for years.
“Council is pleased to announce a successful outcome for this priority project,” said Cr Tehan.
“We’ve submitted several applications for grant funding to create an accessible and safe connection for Malcolm Street residents to schools, High Street, sporting facilities and the Great Victorian Rail Trail. Our persistence has been rewarded and we’ll soon see a shared path where we need it most,” said Cr Tehan.
The funding of $100,000 from the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) will be matched by Council and a path and lighting will be installed with a budget of $210,000. A 2.5 metre asphalt path will be constructed late 2022.
Community members Paul Riley and Tracy Joyce were excited to hear the news about the new path.
“We’ve been trying to get a footpath on Malcolm Street since our children were young, and now one of them is at university,” said Mr Riley.
“I’m a music teacher and lots of students ride their bikes and walk to my place after school. There is currently no safe way to get to my place of business.”
Tracy Joyce said she was grateful that the path would be built.
“We’re finally getting the path we’ve wanted for many years. This is great for Mansfield,” said Ms Joyce.
“Thank you to Council for persisting. We look forward to the construction of a safe shared path for the many residents who need it.”
Residents with properties impacted by the works will receive further information about the project.
