Green Bin Coming to Urban Areas

Survey Open for Feedback on Red Bin Frequency

After a broad community engagement process, the rollout of a green waste bin in the urban areas of Mansfield is proposed from July 2024. Only households that receive a green waste bin will be charged for this fortnightly service, and it is not proposed to supply green waste bins to rural areas to keep costs low.

Mansfield Shire Council is now asking the community to respond to an on-line survey on whether the red bin should be picked up weekly or fortnightly? This is one of the final questions in Council’s community engagement over changes to recycling and waste collection services that have been prompted by Victorian Government legislation.

Deputy Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said that community feedback over changes to waste and recycling services had been carefully considered.

“We know that community members in urban areas are keen to see a green waste service introduced. However, from consultation results obtained to date, our community is evenly split between those who want to retain the weekly red bin and those that wanted a fortnightly red bin collection.

“For urban residents of Mansfield Shire, the cost of the new fortnightly green waste bin could be balanced by the saving from going from a weekly to fortnightly red bin collection service.

“If urban residents want to stay with a weekly red bin, the new fortnightly green waste service will cost each household around $40 extra per year” he said.

For rural residents of Mansfield Shire, there will be no change in cost if the weekly red bin service remains, however if a fortnightly red bin collection is introduced they would save about $30 per year.

Deputy Mayor Cr Steve Rabie said that whether the red bin service is weekly or fortnightly, residents have the option to pay for a larger bin if that better suits their needs.
