Have Your Say on the Green Bin Rollout

Mansfield Shire Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed areas for rollout of the green bins for collection of food and organic waste (FOGO).
Victorian Government legislated changes require councils to offer separate collection services for FOGO and glass. A FOGO (green bin) service will be introduced by Council in July 2024, however following community consultation undertaken in 2022, Council decided not to implement the glass service (purple bin) until 2027.
Deliberative engagement workshops with community members from areas across the Shire have been conducted in the past two weeks to help develop the proposed areas for rollout of the FOGO green bin collection service.
This work has influenced a new online survey which will seek feedback from the broader community on the proposed collection areas for rollout of the green bin service within each of the Shire’s townships.
Mayor Cr James Tehan encouraged everyone to take part in helping to shape the future of our waste and recycling services in Mansfield Shire.
“Defining the urban zones for those who need a kerbside green bin collection service within our Shire townships is an important extra step we wanted to take to ensure the service is cost effective and meets the needs of our community,” he said.
“We heard from the previous engagement with our community that while a kerbside green bin service would be welcomed in townships, there was a preference for rural properties to continue with home composting. As these decisions impact the lives of every community member, and we want to collaborate with the community to ensure the final solution fits our shire.”
The survey will also seek feedback on support services and initiatives, such as local drop off options, and kitchen caddies.
“Everyone in our Shire is touched by our recycling and waste services so it is essential that we understand how to best deliver them, and we do that with your feedback,” said Cr Tehan.
“We know our community cares about environment and sustainability, and waste management has serious environmental impacts.”
“Your feedback is the best way forward for Council to respond to the changed legislative requirements for waste in Victoria.”
It is estimated that approximately 30% of all household general waste collected in the red bin is FOGO material which is currently deposited in landfill at ratepayers’ cost.
The survey is now open and will close on 1 December 2023.
