Works are progressing on the Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route, with the road base construction works on Withers Lane and Dead Horse Lane now complete as far as Ford Creek.

The final pavement sealing is scheduled to occur in October 2022 when weather conditions are more favourable to ensure a durable surface.   The construction of the new left-hand turning lane at the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Withers Lane will be also be completed after the snow season, once weather and traffic conditions are more suitable.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said Council was looking forward to increased safety on our roads for all users as an outcome of the Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route.

“We are pleased with how works are taking shape. The intersection of Withers Land and Deadhorse Lane has received a significant realignment and the improved road design will make for a much smoother trip for heavy vehicles when Stage 1 is complete,” said Cr Tehan.

Upon completion of Stage 1 of the project, a permanent speed limit of 50km/h will apply to Withers Lane and 60km/h to Dead Horse Lane. These limits comply with Department of Transport speed zone guidelines. Until construction is completed, motorists are advised to follow the 40km/h roadwork signage in place.

Council expects to award the contract for construction of Stage 2 of the project at its 21 June meeting. Stage 2 will connect Midland Highway with Mount Buller Road via Dead Horse Lane, Mansfield-Whitfield Road, Mt Battery Road, and Greenvale Lane.

The Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route is part of Council’s long term traffic and transport strategies. This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Mansfield Shire Council. Council has budgeted $3.9 million for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the project and has received $1.95 million from the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
