IMPACT Route Upgrades Announced

Council successfully applied for and received $9.8 million in Federal funding for upgrades to Highton Lane, Rifle Butts Road and Chapel Hill Road.

The upgrades will develop a key agricultural and tourism route called the ‘Integrating Mansfield’s Productivity, Agricultural Communities and Tourism (IMPACT) Route’.

The 26km route will receive 16km of upgrades, including:

Highton Lane, Mansfield

  • The top half of Highton Lane will have new drainage, kerb and channel. A full reconstruction of the road will improve road surface and drainage issues
  • Sealed road widening and footpath additions

Rifle Butts Road, two sections from Ogilvies Road to Mansfield Woods Point Road

  • The road will be widened where necessary and sealed in currently unsealed sections

Chapel Hill Road

  • The road will be widened where necessary, re-sheeted and will have culverts installed to remove water from the road
  • Provide year-round access which creates a vital throughway for emergency services

Archies Lane

  • Extension of Archies Lane and gravel road widening

Mayor Cr James Tehan said on completion the route will link outlying towns and farm businesses with an upgraded, all weather access road and touring route between Mansfield, the Mansfield-Woods Point Road and Mt Buller Road.

“This is a fantastic outcome! Agricultural transport vehicles and stock trucks will have a more direct route to farms. Visitor experience will be enhanced for two- and four-wheel drive vehicles, campers and caravans, with easier access to the Howqua Hills, the Mansfield Zoo, High Country Maze, Jamieson, Goughs Bay and Lake Eildon,” said Cr Tehan.

“This will provide an all-weather route with no weight or size restrictions, so it will serve as a critical route to serve agricultural business.

“It’s important to note that this injection of funds will free up critical funds for other roads in our shire that we know need work.”

The $12.3 million project is funded with $9.8 million from the Federal Government and Council is contributing $2.5 million.
