It’s Our Shire’s 20th Birthday So Let’s Celebrate
Published on 14 October 2022
Community members are invited to join a free community event at the Botanic Park on 22 October at 10am to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Mansfield Shire’s de-amalgamation from Delatite Shire.
Mayor Cr James Tehan said the celebrations would commemorate a significant milestone in our Shire’s history.
“It required an incredible effort of a united community, led by dedicated and hardworking leaders, to achieve the shared objective of independence,” said Cr Tehan.
“I encourage everyone to join this important celebration; to come together and ensure we don’t forget how we reclaimed local government for our community.”
The community is invited to come along to hear from the people involved in the separation movement and to acknowledge the significance of Mansfield Shire achieving its independence. The event will include music, coffee and complimentary food.
A display is available to view at the Visitor Information Centre containing articles and images that tell the story of the State Government reforms of 1994 which amalgamated 210 local government areas in Victoria to just 78 and details how our community came together to fight for its independence from the Delatite Shire.
Copies of ‘The 79th Shire’, a book detailing the events of the de-amalgamation by Don Cummins and Will Twycross, is available for community members to obtain for free from the Library, Visitor Information Centre or from Council’s municipal office.
