Mansfield Shire Council is working with the Mansfield Rotary Club to undertake restoration works to the historic Lych Gate at the entrance of the Mansfield Cemetery.
The Gate was inspected earlier this year and found to have termite damage. As a result, Council installed pest control and engaged Endgrain Industries to repair the termite damage areas to a total value of $18k.
As this was a collaborative project, Rotary conducted a volunteer-run working bee to repaint the exterior of the gatehouse building to restore it to its former glory. Paint and labour were donated by the Rotary members, while Council covered the cost of the scissor lift for the two-day job. On completion of the work to restore the gatehouse building by Rotary, Council will be undertaking further work on the uppermost sections of the gate.
Mayor Cr James Tehan said the cooperation between Mansfield Shire Council and Mansfield Rotary Club showcases the power of community coming together.
“It is great to see this work to restore an iconic piece of our local heritage, the Mansfield Cemetery Lych Gate proceeding,” he said.
Rotary member Stephen Daly said, “The Rotary Club of Mansfield renovated the Lych Gate previously in 1990 and did a fantastic job,”
“The next generation of Rotarians were happy to continue our commitment to the community. In total we had nine volunteers over the first two days and more joined for the final day last Sunday.”
