High Street will have more parking with a temporary, short-term car park being made available on the site of the future High Street carpark while engineering design work is underway for the car park.

Works are to be completed by Alpine Civil prior to Christmas and will involve a gravel surface offering free parking for light vehicle use.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said Council was quick to act when the former Caltex Service Station site became available and made the strategic decision to invest $1.3m to address the lack of parking that is inevitable during periods of high visitation.

“The inability to park in the main street has been a longstanding issue and cause of frustration for our community, business operators and visitors who will now find it easier to enjoy the shopping, leisure and festivities during the holiday break,” he said.

“We know the community is after a good mixture of parking to accommodate longer, wider vehicles as well as short-term parking for trade.

“Concept designs for the permanent car park are currently being drafted by a design consultant and will provide options relating to configuration, pedestrian access and traffic movement. The community will be asked to provide feedback on what is proposed before any plans are endorsed by Council.

“The temporary carpark will remain in place until a suitable layout and design is finalised.”

Construction of the official permanent car park is scheduled to commence in the new year once final designs are approved.
