More Housing for Mansfield

Published on 22 February 2022

Council is supporting a move for more housing in Mansfield with approximately 14 hectares of land proposed to be rezoned at Dead Horse Lane, between the Stock Route and Withers Lane.

Housing shortages continue to challenge Mansfield Shire’s growing population. Recent strategic work has highlighted that land should be made available for diverse, higher density housing that has good access to commercial, community, recreation and employment services.

Mansfield Shire’s population has tripled its forecasted growth. The population increase is one of the highest in regional Victoria.

Mayor Cr James Tehan said that new growth required careful strategic planning and that Council’s work reflected strong leadership and advocacy in this area.

“The secret is out that Mansfield Shire is a great place to live,” said Cr Tehan.

“This kind of growth represents great economic opportunities but can create housing pressure. The rezoning of this land will ensure we can grow our community sustainably and that is Council’s priority.”

This land can accommodate approximately 100 new homes of average sized lots. Council will now request authorisation to exhibit the amendment (Amendment C53) to the Mansfield Planning Scheme to rezone the land to the broader community.

“This amendment will serve to grow our population while maintaining the character of our community. Everyone benefits when population growth is planned well, and this amendment represents the kind of strategic leadership that will serve Mansfield Shire in the long-term.”
