Telstra’s new CEO Vicki Brady has completed a whistle stop tour of the North East, meeting with leaders and economic development specialists from the region’s local government organisations.
Ms Brady, who grew up in the region, was welcomed with open arms to reinforce the relationship between Telstra and the Ovens-Murray regional heads.
Together with senior executives from neighbouring shires, the Chief Executive Officer of Mansfield Shire Council, Kirsten Alexander, welcomed the Telstra CEO to the region.
“The opportunity to highlight improvements necessary to our region’s connectivity is very much welcome,” said Ms Alexander.
Mayor James Tehan said “We’ve been advocating strongly for enhanced telecommunication networks. We appreciated that Vicki Brady came personally to better understand our community and our needs.”
Exciting opportunities discussed at the meeting included the potential upgrade of old local public telephone boxes with the capacity to make free calls and provide free wifi and digital tourism kiosk technology. Low orbit satellite connectivity and further telecommunications infrastructure works were also announced, with the intention of boosting communications across our challenging topography.
“We’re excited about the new improvements coming to our network and we know we will need to continue to advocate for the best services for our community,” said Mayor Tehan.
“Council has had some great wins lately in this space, including new phone towers at Mansfield and Bonnie Doon and the announcement of our move to 5G, which will allow many more users onto our network at once. Telstra have also tailored a solution for McCormack’s Park in Merrijig during high visitation events. We’re pleased with all these innovations and we know there is still plenty of work to be done as our community grows and our needs change.”
