It’s the time of the year for pet registration renewals with payment due by 10 April 2023. Renewal notices are being sent out now and residents who currently have dogs or cats registered with Council should receive their 2023-2024 notices soon.

“Any pet owners who don’t yet have their animals registered with Council are encouraged to do so now” said Senior Coordinator Community Safety, Kevin Murphy.

“The process to register your pet is simple. Animal Registration forms are available on Council’s website or at the Council Offices.”

Discounted fees apply to cats and dogs that are desexed, registered with an approved association (Dogs Victoria or equivalent), dogs that have undergone obedience training with an approved organisation, and animals now over 10 years of age.

Dogs on rural properties that fall into the category of working stock dogs can also be registered at a discounted rate. Concession rates also apply for owners who hold an appropriate pension concession card.

Pet owners who have dogs and cats being registered for the first time must arrange for their pets to be microchipped. This statewide regulation also applies to previously registered dogs and cats that move into Mansfield Shire from another municipality.

All dogs and cats over three months of age must be registered with Council. This is a requirement under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and owners can be fined $370 if not paid by the due date.

“While it is a legal requirement to have your dogs and cats registered, and the penalties are significant if you don’t, pet registration gives you the peace of mind that your pet can be identified and returned to you quickly should it escape or become lost,” added Mr Murphy.

Please contact Council if you do not receive your renewal notice, if any details on the notice are incorrect or if you no longer own the pet. Payment for registrations can be made a variety of ways including BPay and online.

If you have questions regarding pet registration, please contact Council on 5775 8555.
