Road Widening in Malcolm Street
Published on 09 September 2022
The existing narrow section of Malcolm Street over the Owens Creek culvert will be widened to accommodate two-way traffic removing the need to give way to oncoming vehicles.
The culvert under the road will be upgraded which will result in a widening of the road.
The growth of housing development in the area in recent years has seen a dramatic increase in traffic crossing the creek. Through community consultation and a resulting investigation, Council has determined that the widening of the culvert was required to enable two vehicles to cross simultaneously to improve safety and traffic flow for the road users.
Mayor Cr James Tehan said this section of road has become a major access point to town for the growing number of residents in Howes Creek Road.
“When the community expresses their concern about a road, we listen,” he said.
“Upon completion of the works, the requirement to give way to oncoming traffic on what is otherwise an open stretch of road will be removed, ultimately enhancing the safety and efficiency of our road network.
To minimise traffic disruption, works have been timed to take place during the school holidays from 19 – 30 September 2022. Whilst works are underway, the section of road nearest the culvert will be closed. A temporary alternative route will be in place directing traffic along Howes Creek Road, Maroondah Highway and Kidston Parade.
Local contractor Mansfield Constructions have been engaged to complete the $57,330 project.
